About Us
1Our Background
Since our launch in 2021, the team at Ulimi Tongue of Culture (Ulimi TOC) has worked tirelessly to promote our cause. We have volunteers and staff from all walks of life who bring their unique expertise and resources into everything we do. While there is always more that can be done, there is no doubt that we are making a significant impact. We don’t measure our success through just facts and figures, but through dedication, hard work, and heartwarming feedback.
2Language
Many African American children are limited to speaking only English, lacking proficiency in the languages that connect them to their cultural heritage. This contributes to a struggle to identify with their cultural roots. To alleviate this, we hope to provide language program services (Zulu and Swahili) through partnerships with Michigan State University Professors.
3Culture
Embracing their African heritage involves more than just language; it also encompasses traditional dance and folk songs. We plan to coordinate programs with African dance and drum instructors to facilitate this cultural immersion. Through these programs, students can learn and perform traditional dances and songs, fostering a deeper connection to their cultural roots.
